The Witcher 3 wild at heart side quest falls under the category of secondary quests and requires you to be at least on level 7.
The location for the quest is “Blackbough village” in Velen, where a hunter is on a search mission for his missing wife, and the main characters are, Niellen – the hunter, Hanna – the disappeared wife and Margrit – the wife’s sister.
Read this till the end to know how to complete the quest and claim all the rewards.
Wild at heart Witcher 3
To start the side-quest, begin by reading one of the public notices put up all around in Velen, like the Mulbrydale Notice Board.
The notice, seeking the missing wife is as follows:
“While pottering around the well-shaded village of Blackbough, Geralt happened to come across a notice. It stated that a hunter named Niellen was looking for any help he could get in finding his wife, who had gone missing in the nearby woods a few days earlier. Geralt, already deep in a search-and-rescue vein, decided to help find the woman.”
The quest would begin from here.
But before we begin this quest, you might want to have a look at the Witcher 3’s ursine armor which is one of the strongest armors in the game, that equips you to fight all deadly monsters.
Witcher 3 werewolf quest
Follow these steps to complete the quest,
Talk to the hunter named Niellen
After reading the public notice, you travel all the way to blackbough and talk to the hunter whose wife has gone missing. The hunter, Nielle, will tell you all about it.
Meanwhile, Nielle’s sister-in-law would approach you amidst the conversation and direct you towards the butcher’s wife, Glenna, who, she says was friends with Hanna.
Ask the neighbor’s about Hanna (optional)
You, then search for Glenna and ask her about what she knows about Hanna’s disappearance. Then, it is revealed by her that Hanna might have been under an attack by a werewolf.
Later on, you talk to the blacksmith and his children who give you another lead on the case by mentioning about Hanna going into the woods with another woman.
Search for signs of Witcher 3’s Hanna in the woods using your Witcher Senses.
Travel to a place marked on the forest map; there you’ll be encountering a pack of werewolves which you’ll have to defeat to move ahead.
After you kill the wolves, Margrit would appear to give you a Witcher 3 wild at heart choice:
- Bribe you to lie to Niellen that you found his wife’s dead body and hence, stopped the search. She’ll pay you 72 XP for accepting the offer, and an additional 25 for telling him.
- Shrug her off and look for the wife who will lead you to giant claw marks and blood spots and eventually to Hanna’s corpse. (Werewolf must have killed her.)
Find the werewolf lair using your Witcher Senses.
Try to follow the trail of the werewolf marks which will lead to a giant tree and then, a tuff of wolf hair which you can use to track the wolf’s scent.
The trail would take you to an abandoned and isolated shack, where you’ll find chunks of torn clothes. The traces of blood would take you to the door of the wolf’s lair or cave that’s behind the shack.
Search the werewolf’s lair and defeat the wolves
Use the Aard sign to destroy the wooden door of the cave. In the lair, wait till the night falls, and a bunch of wolves would stand in front of you, ready to start a battle. Then, defeat this pack by using items such as Moon Dust, Cursed Oil, Devil’s Puffball and the Igni Sign.
When you have rendered the wolves with enough damage, a cut-scene will play where Margrit would again, stop you from killing the wolf because of a big reason and the reason is that one of the wolves is Neillen himself!
So, the story that will reveal itself in front of you wouldn’t be what you imagined. So, here’s a spoiler – Margrit keeps coming in between because she has been in love with her sister’s husband all this while and she knew his wolf secret too. But her sister was unaware of this secret and one day she decides to tell her the truth by showing her the transformation, where the werewolf accidentally kills her! And he doesn’t know about it since the mutation causes you to forget the memories of the night it happens.
Now, you’ll be provided with two options again since Neillen now wants to take revenge and kill his sister-in-law. So, your choice for Neillen in Witcher 3 is:
- Stop Niellen from killing her.
- Let Niellen kill her.
Now, whatever you choose, Neillen’s death is inevitable, and so is the reward. Because if you decide to stop him, you’d have to kill him in combat and if you let him be, he would kill Margrit and then, reach out to you to kill him for his sins. (no battle involved)
From the werewolf’s corpse, you can look for a key to the locked chest in the Isolated Shack. This should give you rewards like 45 XP, mysterious notes, and a diagram for crafting “Shiadhal’s Armor.”
This brings us to the triumphant denouement of the Witcher 3 wild at heart side-quest which was filled with suspense and a bunch of adrenaline-pumping wolf fights. Keep playing and slaying monsters. Happy gaming!
